This article is part of the Chicago Budget Decorator Restoration Series.
For a cheap and easy way to re-decorate a mirror, a $5 can of spray paint, newspapers, an old rag, tape, and a razor blade, are all you’ll need! This quick change can add a dramatic punch of color, or just a new look to your old mirror. Spray paint can be purchased at your Chicagoland Home Depot –For Illinois locations, click here.
- Step 1: Set-Up
Set up your workspace (outdoor space recommended) by laying newspapers or an old tarp on the ground. - Step 2: Tape
Cover the inside of the mirror with newspaper and tape around the edges with the painters tape. - Step 3: Prep
Clean the mirror frame with a damp rag to clean the surface. - Step 4: Spray
Keeping the spray about 6 inches away from the frame, begin spraying with a thin layer of paint. Keeping the paint thinner will help prevent running and thick spots. Keep your stroke as smooth and constant as possible to avoid darker spots. Repeat this process until you’ve achieved the color you desire. For a more rich, glossy look, apply several layers. - Step 5: Clean
Once the frame is dry (about an hour), remove the tape and newspaper. Take your damp rag and wash the edges of the mirror to remove an paint. For spots accidentally painted on the mirror, take a razor blade and gently remove the paint, without scratching the glass. - Step 6: EnjoyHang and enjoy your masterpiece!
