HGTV/Food Network Star Taniya Nayak Gives Poor Girl’s Guide Her Stylescope Tips

HomeGoods, the country’s only major off-price retailer dedicated to home fashions, announced the recent launch of its brand new Stylescope. HomeGoods partnered with interior designer and TV Host, Taniya Nayak, to create the new Stylescope, a unique, one-question quiz that reveals your home design horoscope featuring 12 distinct design personalities.
Just as a horoscope determines your personality, Stylescope helps determine your design personality. By simply choosing five images that make you happy from a predetermined list of choices, your Stylescope is revealed.

Taniya gives Lauren Wulf of Poor Girl’s Guide Chicago, her tips for the quiz and savvy ways to save money and keep your style fresh! Check it out below:

HomeGoods Stylescope Quiz

LAUREN: Using the Stylescope is great!  How would you suggest combining your different styles without overdoing it (i.e. Farmhouse Glam)?

  • TANIYA: It is such a fun and easy quiz! It’s very possible to combine styles without overdoing it. First- it’s important to pick pieces from the styles that are meaningful to you. Then the best way to combine styles is to keep a similar color palette. By doing that, you can mix and match your styles together, but still keep it cohesive.

LAUREN: Let’s say you’re a girl that gets bored a lot – are there tricks to re-using items and re-arranging without buying new accessories every year?

  • TANIYA: Well, let me start by saying that I am that girl! I am a switch-aholic based from boredom! I often take throw pillows from my bedroom and swap them for the pillows in my living room. I have accent chairs throughout the house that get pulled into the dining room and added to either end of the dining table for additional seating, and I love that they don’t match the rest of the seating! The secret is to keep a neutral base. Buy your larger pieces of furniture in grays or browns, and then accessorize in bold pops of color. I love to get my accessories from HomeGoods because they are affordable and have so many things to choose from in so many different styles. It makes it much easier and much more fun to buy accessories that way!

LAUREN: Keeping saving money in mind – are there certain pieces you recommend to buy in classic/neutral looks?  Are there certain pieces you think it’s ok to buy in a more trendy style?

  • TANIYA: Just as I mentioned above—buy the bigger pieces in neutrals and in styles that will last through the years and have fun with the accessories! An accent chair is still affordable when buying from HomeGoods, and so much can change with a simple lamp, a piece of art, and of course—my favorite quick fix change…throw pillows!

Lace-Patterned Pumpkin

Not all pumpkins are orange, nor are they necessarily destined to become leering jack-o’-lanterns. The designs used on these pumpkins, carved freehand, mimic the lacelike openwork of 18th-century pierced creamware dishes, and turn any pumpkin (especially a pale Lumina) into an intricately patterned lamp.

Lace-Patterned Pumpkin How-To

1. Select a pumpkin or squash such as Lumina, spaghetti squash, or Blue Hubbard. You’ll need wood-carving tools, sold in hardware and art-supply stores. For this project, small pieces of pipe can also be used to make cuts and punch out circles from the gourd. When choosing tools, bear in mind the shape of the perforation your tool will make, and choose those that produce unusual punctures. For example, top and bottom cuts with a V-shaped gouge leave a diamond form.

2. Cut an opening in the bottom of your pumpkin. Scrape out the seeds and most of the flesh. Place a length of masking tape around the circumference of the gourd as a carving guideline. Start cutting.

3. The going gets easier once you’ve circled the pumpkin with a pattern — just keep following it, adding more bands of cuts. If you carve a small, simple design that doesn’t feed the candle much air, make an air hole on one side to help it burn.

Homespun Pumpkin Decorations

Martha Stewart

credit: Martha Stewart

Assembled from yarn, rope, and foam balls, these homespun pumpkin decorations are simple to make. For each, gently press top and bottom of a Styrofoam ball against a work surface to flatten ends (so ball doesn’t roll). Wrap orange roving around ball. Insert a T pin into top. Tie cream or orange mohair yarn to pin and cover ball. Cut a length of rope; place over pin, and attach with a hot-glue gun, pressing to secure.
